{"id":268,"date":"2006-08-14T08:01:45","date_gmt":"2006-08-14T12:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bohls.org\/?p=268"},"modified":"2025-05-30T17:20:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T21:20:12","slug":"1701","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bohls.org\/blog\/2006\/08\/14\/1701\/","title":{"rendered":"1701"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bohls.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1701words.jpg\" align=\"left\" \/>The Security Council <strong>decides<\/strong> four things and <strong>requests<\/strong> four things, but only <strong>authorizes<\/strong> one thing, apparently.\u00a0And three <strong>calls on<\/strong>&#8216;s and three <strong>calls upon<\/strong>&#8216;s really make up six <strong>calls<\/strong>, by my count.<\/p>\n<p>But seriously, who could fail to\u00a0adore 1701, what with something for just about everyone in it?<\/p>\n<p>After <strong>recalling<\/strong> such and such, the usual preamble, sort of the Security Council&#8217;s way of beginning, kinda like, <em>Dear World, How ya been? Listen, the reason I&#8217;m writing is &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>First things first. Listen, Hezbollah. You started this. Yeah, that&#8217;s right.\u00a0We&#8217;re talking to <em>you<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u00a0a little dance, first leaning on Hezbollah for the unconditional release of the abducted Israeli soldiers. but then also, let&#8217;s be fair here, calling for\u00a0urgently settling the issue of the Lebanese prisoners detained in Israel,<\/p>\n<p>A quick shout out to Lebanon itself. Let&#8217;s get this done quickly. But\u00a0this is neither the time nor the place to\u00a0<em>even<\/em> get into the Shebaa farms here. (Goodness, whose idea was it to mention\u00a0<em>that<\/em> mess?)<\/p>\n<p>Okay, fifteen-thousand Lebanese troops and then somesuch number of international (later specified as <em>another fifteen-thousand<\/em> for UNIFIL).<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s work on a long-term solution. This is making everybody everywhere a little nervous.<\/p>\n<p>So, therefore: stop fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Wiggle room for Israel here, as the Council calls for a halt to <em>all<\/em>\u00a0Hezbollah attacks and a halt to Israel&#8217;s <em>offensive<\/em> military operations.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanon, why don&#8217;t you try a little harder. Blue line, meaning Lebanon, try a little harder. Let&#8217;s all help Lebanon try a little harder. Maybe a little money to help Lebanon try a little harder.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations will do A, B, and C. Fifteen-thousand troops for UNIFIL.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone will make sure that nobody is selling arms to anybody in Lebanon. (How did <em>that <\/em>slip through? That&#8217;s a nifty piece of work, Dr. Rice.)<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and\u00a0by the way,\u00a0242 and 338. (Oh, that&#8217;s how. Even niftier.)<\/p>\n<p>And, as always, their version of <em>Yours truly<\/em>, the Council\u00a0decides to remain <strong>actively seized <\/strong>of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; &#8212; &#8212; &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>In all seriousness, a pretty good job.
