Lebanon

Okay, so is it just me, or does anyone else think all hell is breaking loose lately? There’s North Korea. I’ve mentioned Mumbai. Now it’s Israel going into Lebanon.

I hate hate hate war.

Although I don’t know what else Israel’s supposed to do, if Lebanon can’t or won’t control Hezbollah. (I suppose that goes for India too, if Pakistan can’t or won’t control Lashkar-e-Toiba. Or if Lebanon does control Hezbollah but uses them as their proxy, likewise Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Toiba.) And but I was very much not a fan of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon back in 1982, when they invaded to root out and destroy the PLO. How well did that turn out?

Like with the Infitada(s), Israel has the muscle, if it wants to use it, but if faces a whole lotta people.

Hezbollah was founded to fight that invasion, too, in 1982, by the way. So if Israel destroys Hezbollah now, isn’t somebody else just going to replace them?

  1. It is a terribly frightening time, and it occurs to me that the US can’t really come to the aid of Israel if the govt wanted to, for fear of losing our right to use bases in Arabic countries while we’re in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I agree that Israel has the right to defend itself, but I disagree with the bombing of airports and streets in Lebanon. That enrages me. That makes about as much sense as bombing my house for something that some nutbag did, someone either outside of the govt or in the govt. My point is, if they have to react to violence with violence, I wish that they would do some kind of surgical strike with swat teams to go after those who are responsible. People who are pro-war react to this argument by saying, “war is hell, there’s always collatoral damage,” etc. I don’t buy it. I find the bombing of civilians and of their houses, streets and bridges indefensible. I heard the other day that an estimated 45,000 Iraqi civilians have died since our govt started this war. I wish that would get more press. It enrages me because I’m sure that most of those people had nothing to do with this war — just as I have nothing to do with it, and it has nothing to do with me. I wish warring leaders would just beat each other up and leave the rest of us alone.

  2. Isn’t it fortunate that we have land-based forces nearby and not just off-shore Marines.

Wow, it’s like there was a strategic reason for invading Iraq or something.

  3. Well, I was certainly wrong in my earlier assessment that the US couldn’t come to Israel’s aid. Now we are doing just that by expediting laser-guided bombs to them so they can kill more people. Every one of the civilians killed by Israel in this action is blood on the hands of George Bush, Condi Rice and their cabal. I find their actions shameful and maddening. All they will end up doing is stirring up more and more hate. What do you think that these orphaned Lebanese children will be doing 10 years from now?
